Children’s Dentistry

Dental care is important at every age, but for young children, that also means considering their smiles’ proper growth and development. In addition to routine preventive visits, which they should begin by at least the age of three, children often require additional preventive measures to fortify their teeth against cavities. When cavities develop, they also require prompt, conservative treatment to preserve a healthy smile and safeguard the permanent teeth that are still developing. At our office, we’re highly experienced in caring for young smiles, from offering comfortable, personalized treatment to helping children feel comfortable and welcome every time they visit our office.

  • The first visit – While children don’t usually need routine dental care until about three years old, you should bring your child in as soon as the first tooth appears, or by the first birthday, for an initial pediatric visit. The appointment will introduce your child to visiting the dentist without the anxiety of having to undergo an examination or treatment. It will also allow us to ensure that the first tooth has developed and erupted properly.
  • Checkups and cleanings – Regular checkups and cleanings for children are similar to your own routine appointments, but with an additional emphasis on education and good hygiene tips. Our experience with children and our team’s calm, comforting approach to care help children remain calm during every visit, and we encourage parents to be next to them in the treatment room the entire time.
  • Dental sealants – The best way to prevent issues like cavities is to keep your child’s teeth strong enough to fight off the harmful bacteria (plaque) that cause them. Dental sealants are a biocompatible layer of acrylic that we can paint onto the chewing surfaces of your child’s teeth. The acrylic conforms to the shape of the surface, providing a barrier between your child’s tooth enamel and the bacteria that make up dental plaque.
  • Fluoride treatments – While dental sealants directly block bacteria from reaching tooth enamel, fluoride treatments strengthen the enamel itself. Tooth enamel is made up almost completely of minerals, such as calcium and fluoride. Oral bacteria weaken the enamel by producing acids that sap teeth of minerals. Fluoride helps reverse this effect by remineralizing the enamel and strengthening its weakened bonds.
