Common Dental Emergencies

What are examples of a dental emergency? This refers to any injury or discomfort in the tooth that is serious enough to require immediate attention from the dentist, but not severe enough that calling 911 or proceeding to an emergency room is necessary. For example, this could include a chipped or broken tooth, or one that is fractured or knocked loose. If a tooth is fully knocked-out, then you also need to see us right away! Consider a visit if you have unexplained pain, or something caught between the teeth or under the gums that floss cannot extricate.

If a restoration, such as a filling or crown, is missing or lost, or if you have a compromised prosthetic or orthodontic, then again let us know and schedule a visit!

Easing Your Initial Discomfort

In the meantime, you can help by taking an over-the-counter pain reliever to ease your initial discomfort. You can stem any bleeding with gauze or cloth, or anything soft, and then use a cold compress to the side of the face to prevent swelling. If a tooth is broken, then try to recover any pieces and bring them with you. If this proves impossible, don’t worry, we can still repair your tooth! Likewise, if a tooth is knocked out fully, then pick it up and place it in a sealed container of milk or salt water. Don’t touch the roots though!
